Thought Experiment #45,730,944

A pseudophilosopher and a̶s̶p̶i̶r̶i̶n̶g̶ professional hippy's contribution to cyberspace

(And here’s my PGP key)

(…And my LinkedIn and portfolio)

(And finally, for real, my Pinterest, where I keep cool examples and works I have found on the topics of privacy advocacy, youth and media and uses of tech for change)

My name is Mariel (better known as faeriedevilish online since I was 12 years old). As you may have guessed from the description of this website, I am a former philosophy student, and an̶ a̶s̶p̶i̶r̶i̶n̶g̶ professional hippy. I’ve been obsessed with the intersections between new media and society, as well as activism, for the past 12 years. In the past, my online persona spoke a lot about food, gymnastics and Olympism – which might explain some of the oldest posts on this site (or from faeriedevilish in other spaces).

I am from Mexico City, where I spent all my time plotting how to save the world, eating spicy vegetables and watching funny cat videos. I am now based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where I am a graduate student at the Comparative Media Studies program at MIT, a research assistant at the Center for Civic Media at the MIT Media Lab and an affiliate at the Berkman Klein Center for Internet and Society at Harvard Law School. My ongoing interests are youth and media, digital literacies, privacy, moral education, participatory processes and feminism. Oh, I also tweet a damn lot.

Before being a student again, I worked in technological capacity building in different formats. I did research and instructional design, as an external consultant, for organizations like the Open Knowledge Foundation, the engine room and Internews; I mentored young content creators at UNICEF; I did practical research, training and community building at SocialTIC (and some of its projects, like Escuela de Datos), as well as content and communications strategy at Nova México; I was a summer intern at the Youth and Media Lab at the Berkman Center for Internet and Society. Before all this, I studied philosophy at the National University of Mexico.

Ah – as for the type of professional hippy I want to be? One that gets to make a difference in the world from a field where culture, media and philosophy meet.
Especially, one that spends more time doing things than talking about getting things done.

About the existence of Thought Experiment #45,730,944

In 2010, about ten years after the first day that hours spent ‘on the internet’ became a fixture in my life, I decided to accept and act upon my friend and mentor Empathetics’ sentence: if we’re going to be on the internet, we should do so intentionally. In this website, I plan to condense some of the stuff I post online to start keeping track of it somewhere and keep it useful for myself, and open to whoever wants to have access to it.

About the content of Thought Experiment #45,730,944

Worry not: I will, for the most part, not spam you with the latest debate on rhythmic gymnastics. Expect to find content about tech capacity building, digital media, activism, food (especially food), all mixed in with some spam about my life and things I like.

Why Thought Experiment #45,730,944?

Because I love thought experiments. I live for thought experiments. Getting a degree for immersing my brain in thought experiments is like a dream come true. So here is another thought experiment that may not be as cool as the brain in the vat, but definitely #45,730,944.
